What Are the Specific Strength and Hardness of Titanium Plates?

March3, 2025

The strength and hardness of titanium plates vary depending on factors such as the purity of titanium, alloy composition, and processing techniques.

Commercially Pure Titanium Plates

1. For commercially pure titanium, such as TA1 and TA2, the tensile strength generally ranges from 240 to 550 MPa. For example, the tensile strength of TA1 is ≥ 240 MPa, and the yield strength is ≥ 140 MPa. The tensile strength of TA2 is ≥ 400 MPa, and the yield strength is ≥ 275 MPa.

2. Commercially pure titanium has relatively low hardness. The Rockwell hardness (HRC) is generally between 20 and 30, and the Brinell hardness (HB) is approximately between 100 and 200.

Titanium Alloy Plates

1. The room-temperature strength of α-type titanium alloys (such as TA4) is generally lower than that of β-type and α + β-type titanium alloys (but higher than that of commercially pure titanium). Its tensile strength can reach about 600 to 900 MPa. However, its strength also varies depending on the specific alloy composition and processing state.

2. In terms of hardness, titanium alloy plates are generally harder than commercially pure titanium plates. For example, after appropriate heat treatment, some titanium alloys can have a Rockwell hardness (HRC) of about 30 to 50 and a Brinell hardness (HB) of about 200 to 400.

Influencing Factors

1. Alloying Elements: Adding alloying elements (such as aluminum, vanadium, molybdenum, etc.) can significantly increase the strength and hardness of titanium plates. For example, Ti-6Al-4V, a common α + β-type titanium alloy, has a tensile strength of over 900 MPa and is much harder than commercially pure titanium.

2. Processing Techniques: Hot working (such as forging, hot rolling) and cold working (such as cold rolling, cold drawing) also have an impact on the strength and hardness of titanium plates. Cold working can increase the strength and hardness of titanium plates through work hardening, and appropriate heat treatment can further adjust their mechanical properties.
